Following Peter Nygard’s judgment for four counts of sexual assault, Winnipeg has revoked the Key to the City, which it considers to be its highest honor.

St. Norbert- Seine River County spoke at a committee meeting on Thursday. According to Markus Chambers, Nygard was awarded the honor in 2008 after starting a fashion business in Winnipeg in 1967 that would later grow to be known as Kygard International.

Following Nygard’s new views and additional charges against him that are still pending in court, Chambers then inquired of Mayor Scott Gillingham as to what steps were being taken to maintain the integrity of the honor.

In response, Gillingham said he had requested that Nygard’s name be removed from the list of important consumers in light of the views.

Nygard was taken off the list earlier this month, a spokeswoman for Gillingham stated in an email on Saturday.

Pilot Chris Hadfield and Cindy Blackstock, the executive producer of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society, are two different original beneficiaries of Winnipeg’s Essential to the City.

Critical to the City is regarded as one of Winnipeg’s highest honors. During a part of Thursday’s committee meeting set aside for questions for the president, Chambers stated that it is intended to bestow trust and honor on citizens who have made significant contributions to our good city.

The respect and honor that the Major to the City represents are called into question by Mr. Nygard’s new court proceedings, including his faith, as well as his ongoing legal issues,” he continued.

Chambers added that rejecting the honor would convey aid to Nygard’s patients.

Gillingham retorted,” We do get this really seriously. The highest honor we can offer on one is” The Essential to the City.”

An Ontario judge found Nygard guilty of four counts of sexual abuse earlier this month. He was found not guilty of a cost of forced confinement as well as the second count. The accusations that led to the charges were made between the 1980s and the middle of the 2000s.

During the trial, five ladies testified that they had been invited to Nygard’s office at 1 Niagara St. in Toronto under a variety of pretexts, including tours and job interviews. All of their interactions had culminated in sexual assaults on four of the women in the top-floor bathroom suite.

Later this month, a deadline for his punishment will be decided. His defense attorneys have stated that they are debating whether there are basis for appealing the decision.

The Nygard organization had commercial locations in both Canada and the United States and produced women’s clothing under a variety of brand names.

Images of the tycoon were previously displayed in his stores all over Winnipeg. A” Nygard gallery” with a ceiling collage of images depicting Nygard with politicians, actors, musicians, and designs was part of the original company’s enormous head office and submission building.

Previous Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman and then-deputy leading Holly Stefanson attended a dinner in 2018 to celebrate the 50th celebration of Nygard International. Teemu Selanne, a former soccer favorite for the Winnipeg Jets, movie greeting.

Marshall stated that he would want the Major to the City again if Nygard’s accusations were proven in court when they first surfaced in 2020.

He is accused of sexual assault and forced incarceration in individual circumstances in Quebec and Manitoba, related to allegations dating up to the 1990s. Nygard is also facing criminal charges in three different areas, including the U.S.

In those other states, none of the accusations against Nygard have been put to the test in jury.

After the FBI and authorities raided Nygard’s offices in New York City in February 2020, he resigned from his position as president of the company. Since then, the business has declared debt and entered into bankruptcy.

The Canadian Press first released this statement on November 25, 2023.
